Thoughts for Food: Table Graces

Unitarian Universalists covenant to affirm and promote, among other things, "respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part."

Taking time to pause before a meal and acknowledge in silence or with words, our interdependence, is a great way to live into this aspirational principle of our faith.   Here are some examples of table graces you're invited to use or adapt for your own practice...

May the love we share around this table with family and friends
         renew us in spirit.
May the spirit of hope, joy, peace, and love dwell within our hearts
         this day and forever more.   Amen.

Spirit of Life, our family here assembled is abidingly grateful for the beauty of this place in which we dwell.
We are thankful also for the good food to eat and the health to enjoy it,
for the love that binds our lives and sustains our spirits.  Amen

May we hold hands quietly for a moment...
Feeling love flow around us and through us,
knowing that as we give it away
there is always more here.  Amen.

O God/Goddess, we are thankful for this food and all that nourishes us in life.
May we use them with imagination for the life of others.  Amen.

A circle of friend is a blessed thing;
Sweet is the breaking of bread with friends;
For the honor of their presence at our table
We are deeply grateful.

Bearing in mind that we live our lives at the expense of other life, may we be worthy of the sacrifice.

It is a blessing to be.
It is a blessing to be here.
It is a blessing to be here now.
It is is a blessing to be here now, together.

May we come to know what is good in us, to use what is good in us, and to share what is good in us with one another.

Let us pause to remember what made this meal possible.
For the soil, sun, and rain...we give thanks.
For the creatures great and small...we give thanks.
For the labor of many hands, hearts and minds...we give thanks.
For this time to be together...we give thanks.
Amen and Blessed Be
